The Atlantic hired and then fired Kevin Williamson. The Atlantic is a Leftist publication. Williams opposed abortion. There you have it.

The claim from some Leftists is that Williamson was fired because of his nutty views on abortion. He believes women who abort their unborn children should be punished for their crime.

I’m not so much concerned about The Atlantic‘s actions. I’m more concerned with the response of conservatives. Here are a few of them as reported in USA Today:

Conservatives fanned out to attack The Atlantic and “the left” for their closed-mindedness in not embracing a view that calls for the humiliating, torturous killing by the state of women who have had an abortion.

Commentary’s Noah Rothman called Williamson’s firing “chilling,” and The Resurgent’s Erick Erickson said that it was all “about the left wanting a monopoly on the public square so none can be exposed to competing ideas.” The American Conservative’s Rod Dreher tweeted, “The Atlantic‘s cutting (Williamson) loose under left-wing fire is deplorable. But clarifying. Definitely clarifying.”

Reason’s Katherine Mangu-Ward wrote, “The Atlantic is essentially declaring that it cannot stomach real, mainstream conservatism as it actually exists in 21st century America.”

What do these conservatives expect from an ideologically primed publication like The Atlantic to do? Why should any publication allow anyone to write for them who holds a contrary opinion?

Would a pro-life publication want someone who supports abortion to be a featured writer? I don’t think so.

I’ve heard conservatives say, “Why is it OK to fire someone over their view of abortion, but it’s not OK for a bakery not to make a cake for a same-sex wedding?” Some would say it’s hypocrisy. No, it’s called winning. “We’re right, and they’re wrong, so it’s OK for us to discriminate against what’s wrong.”

The squishy middle of conservatism is naive. They actually believe that if they accommodate Leftist policies just a little bit that Leftists will return the favor. Don’t you ever believe it. The GOP continues to believe the lie that accommodation with Democrats will garner good will among Democrats. It will not happen.

Consider the support that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey gave to the article “The Great Lesson of California in America’s New Civil War,” written by Peter Leyden and Ruy Teixeira. These guys understand that we are in an ideological war, and in a war, you don’t give in to the enemy:

The next time you call for bipartisan cooperation in America and long for Republicans and Democrats to work side by side, stop it. Remember the great lesson of California, the harbinger of America’s political future, and realize that today such bipartisan cooperation simply can’t get done.

In this current period of American politics, at this juncture in our history, there’s no way that a bipartisan path provides the way forward. The way forward is on the path California blazed about 15 years ago.

The Democrat Party (and much of the GOP) is the enemy. Their policies are immoral and destructive. Leyden and Teixeiray mention quite a few of them. They believe that these policies will sweep the nation and end in “Democratic Super-Majorities.” How will this be accomplished? By not compromising with Republicans.

Let me say, however, that their accolades for California are way off base, but they believe them. It shows how nutty the Left is. Even so, these guys and their followers are willing to work to see their goals accomplished without compromise. If they win, anyone who disagrees with them and their ilk will be shut out of everything from education and politics to media and law. It’s already happening.

The Democrats will work for this super-majority. Leyden and Teixeiray see 2018 as the turning point that will make most of the United States like California. “California is the future,” they write, “always about 15 years ahead of the rest of the country. That means that America, starting in 2018, is going to resolve it, too.” If you are frightened by such a development, then you better get to work and make sure that 2018 does not turn into an electoral disaster.

The last thing we want is for the politics of California to infect the rest of the nation.

Conservatives need to stop whining about being shut out by liberals. They need to find a way to work around the obstacles. No one likes whiners.
