Why Grover Norquist Hates Ted Cruz

Grover Norquist has been out front in his attacks against Ted Cruz. Norquist is the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform, an organization that opposes all tax increases. Norquist is an Establishment Republican insider while flirting with leftist causes like statehood for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is on the advisory board of GOProud, a political organization representing Republican homosexuals, transgendered people, and sits on a six-person advisory panel that nominates Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

In 2004, Grover Norquist married a Palestinian Muslim named Samah Alrayyes, a Kuwaiti PR specialist who was formerly a director of the Islamic Free Market Institute and specialist at the Bureau of Legislative and Public Affairs at United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

David Horowitz has described Norquist as an “Islamist Fifth Column.” Michelle Malkin has also written about Norquist’s Muslim ties.

Norquist works within the bowels of the Establishment Republican Party but has done little to move a true conservative agenda forward.

Add to all of this a relentless attack on Cruz. Norquist is “demanding that Ted Cruz ‘apologize’ to House Republicans for not having a viable strategy.” And so what is Norquist’s strategy?:

“I think the original plan for the Republicans was to move the continuing resolution past the debt ceiling and then to sit down with Obama and decide whether he would be willing to trade some relaxation of the Sequester for significant reforms of entitlements. That was something Obama might well do.”

So the Republicans were to give in and hope that Obama would agree to “significant reforms of entitlements.” That’s it? That’s a strategy?

Why would the supposed “arch-conservative” Norquist attack Cruz when Cruz was mounting real opposition to Obama’s agenda that would have slowed government spending and defunded ObamaCare? Money and prestige.

One of my favorite writers is William Goldman. You’ve most likely watched a film whose screenplay was written by Goldman” Marathon Man (based on his novel of the same name), The Stepford Wives, Misery, The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and many others.

Goldman wrote the famous line “Follow the money” for the screenplay of All the President’s Men. Therein lies the reason Grover Norquist has been attacking Ted Cruz. Norquist makes his money working with Establishment Republicans. Without them, Norquist is out of a job and without a stream of income. As long as there is a fight, Norquist makes money.

If Cruz had succeeded in rallying moderate Republicans to his cause, Norquist would have lost his GOP Establishment pull. All the big money that goes to Americans for Tax Reform would dry up. Obama and the Democrats could be beaten with ideas and politicians with a backbone and very little funding. We’re already hearing how big-business Republicans are planning to defeat the Tea Party with funding to Establishment Republicans.

Grover Norquist is a lot like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. He, like Jackson and Sharpton, needs to keep the political pot boiling in order to stay in business.

Ted Cruz comes along and does it all on the cheap. This worries the GOP consultants who make money even if GOP candidates lose.
