I was reading an article written by my friend Darren Doane on how he became a music video director. It all started when he saw Paula Abdul’s 1988 music video “Straight Up.”

“So – Way Back in 1989 there was no Internet. And directors’ names were not on videos. So you actually had to do Research. And, lo and behold, I found out who made it. And how. Some young guy named David Fincher? And he shot it all on a … Drum roll … Cymbal crash…. A Super 8 camera?”

For those not in the know, David Fincher is a mega-film director with a string of high-powered film credits to his name. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) and The Social Network (2010). He also directed “the psychological thrillers Seven (1995), Fight Club (1999), the mystery thrillers Zodiac (2007) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) and Gone Girl (2014), as well as being pivotal in the creation of the critically acclaimed U.S. television series House of Cards.”

Before doing these and other noted films, Fincher had worked for Industrial Light & Magic “where he was an assistant cameraman and matte photographer. . . . In 1984, he left ILM to direct a commercial for the American Cancer Society that shows a fetus smoking a cigarette.”

It’s one of the most anti-abortion productions ever made, although I’m almost certain that wasn’t the intention of the American Cancer Society or David Fincher.

Showing a “fetus” smoking a cigarette was seen as a grave moral wrong.

Now let’s compare the image with a cigarette-smoking ‘fetus’ with a ‘fetus’ having his skull crushed by the folks at Planned Parenthood and having his body parts sold to the highest bidder?

Maybe Darren Doane can produce side-by-side videos showing the American Cancer Society video and one showing the killing of an unborn baby. Why is one a moral evil and the other a matter of personal choice?

Don’t ever smoke while pregnant because it will damage the health of your child, but it’s OK to kill your unborn baby. Am I missing something?

Can anyone say “moral equivalence”? Not if you’re from Hollywood (mostly) and a supporter of Planned Parenthood.

One commentator wrote, “There goes the cluster of cells argument, that they are desensitized cells. If they react this way to smoking imagine how they react [to] having their limbs ripped off . . . .”
