Liberal Commentator Wrong that Abortion Rights Movement is the “NRA of the Left”
Kirsten Powers is a liberal Democrat who is pro-life. Writing for The Daily Beast website, Powers “made a shocking comparison – legislatively speaking – concerning the Gosnell trial and the abortion rights movement in her [May 6th] column” that the Abortion Rights Movement “has become ‘the NRA of the left.’”
Abortion rights groups and liberals most undoubtedly will attack Powers with relentless fury over her comparison.
Ann Coulter wrote something similar in her book Godless:
“Abortion is the sacrament and Roe v. Wade is Holy Writ. This is why we have to have World War III every time there’s an opening on the Supreme Court. As long as Roe is the law of the land, elected Democrats can hide behind the Supreme Court’s ruling. They rarely have to cast votes on abortion bills, because the High Court has removed abortion from the democratic process. All the Democrats have to do is smear any Supreme Court nominee who might possibly vote to overturn Roe and finally allow Americans to vote on abortion.”
Unfortunately for Powers, the comparison is not accurate. Don’t get me wrong. I’m thankful Powers wrote what she did. Given the state of liberal politics today, she is certainly braver than Jason Collins who came out to tell the world that he has sex with other men.
Here’s why Power’s analogy is wrong, although it’s still a valiant effort to call attention to the bloody business of abortion. Even with all the gun deaths in America, they don’t come near the number of abortion deaths.
There were 50,000 in attendance at the NRA convention in Houston over the weekend. There are 5 million NRA members.
Here’s where the comparison breaks down between the Abortion Rights Movement and the NRA: Not a single NRA member killed anybody during the mega-conference. Compare that zero statistic to the nearly 4000 pre-born babies that were aborted yesterday and every day before yesterday for 40 years.
If an NRA member had killed someone, it was probably because the person had threatened his life. Not so with the child in the womb. A baby in the womb is not an aggressor.
NRA members are about protecting life. Abortionists are killers. The fact that the Abortion Rights Movement has remained silent over the Kermit Gosnell killings is prima facie evidence that abortion is what Ann Coulter described it to be — a liberal sacrament, a bloody liberal sacrament.
