Did Dolly Parton Insult Her Fan Base at the Emmys?
This year’s Emmy Awards was a Dump on Trump Hate Fest. At least that’s what I’ve been told. I’ve never watched the Emmys. Here’s a summary of the evening’s anti-Trump show:
The 2017 Emmys certainly lived up to its billing as being the most politically charged ever.
Within seconds, host Stephen Colbert, singing an opening number themed around how seemingly out of control world events are, took a few soft jabs at President Trump. But then Julia-Louis Dreyfus quickly upped the ante, joining in and singing, “Imagine if your president wasn’t loved by Nazis.”
Once the monologue actually began, Colbert dedicated almost five minutes to mocking Trump.
The stage thus set, politics pervaded almost the entirety of the broadcast.
With virtually every presenter or award recipient working in at least one political reference, those who avoided politics were more notable than those who didn’t. (Grabien)
The anti-Trump screeds went on and on. Dolly Parton appeared with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, their first reunion since their 9 to 5 film in 1980. Here’s how it went:
9 to 5 stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton reunited on stage to announce the winner of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series at the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards — and take a shot at President Donald Trump.
“Back in 1980 in that movie, we refused to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot,” said Jane Fonda, with Lily Tomlin quickly adding, “And in 2017, we still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot.”
It remains to be seen how the politically-charged award show will be received by middle-America and how Parton’s appearance with the ultra-liberals Tomlin and Fonda and their anti-Trump reference will affect her standing among people who attend Dollywood.
Dolly looked uncomfortable. She was smart to keep her mouth shut about Trump.
Look what’s happened to anti-Trump A-list actress Jennifer Lawrence’s latest film project, Mother! It tanked with an opening under $7.5 million. That only goes halfway to pay Lawrence’s $15 million salary. Rex Reed described Mother! as “the worst movie of the year, maybe [the] century.” (Observer)
Although you will spend most of the painful, torturous and stressful two hours it takes to survive mother! trying to figure out what it’s all about, I advise you to ignore the reviews entirely and make up your own fantasy. One critic says it’s a satire on the chaos the dysfunctional world has been turned into by Donald Trump. Another says the title refers to the role played by Jennifer Lawrence, the director’s current personal squeeze and cinematic muse, whom he slobbers over in endlessly annoying close-ups that emphasize her flaws and rob the viewer of the power of self-discovery. One reviewer says she plays the quintessential Earth mother who works feverishly to restore balance to a planet Earth that is being constantly torn apart by wickedness and savagery. I love the review that compares the movie to the “lancing of a boil.” They all insist mother! is a metaphor for something, although they are not quite sure what it is.
Lawrence has decided to take some time off after she got blasted for her Trump comments regarding Hurricane Irma.
Not surprisingly, the majority of critics loved it. Mother! Got stomped on by an evil killer clown named It by more than $200 million. I suspect that if Stephen King wrote It today, he would make it about Trump.
