Another Very Bad Anti-Gun Meme

If you’re patient, you can find all the bad arguments you can handle.

Since I write for a living, I’ll never be out of a job. All I need to do is spend about ten minutes on Facebook to mine all the material I’ll ever need.

It’s like the Discovery Channel’s “Gold Rush” but without the cold, broken equipment, and pittance in found gold.

Facebook is a goldmine of bad thinking. Here’s one bid of anti-gun “logic” I had not seen until today:

A kid on the playground throws a rock at another kid on the playground. The teacher gives rocks to all the kids, since, after all only a good kid with a rock can stop a bad kid with a rock.

All the kids had access to the rocks. Only one kid picked up a rock and threw it at another kid. The problem isn’t the rocks; the problem is with the kid who threw the rock.

Was there a playground rule that the kids were are not permitted to throw rocks? Yes. Did the rule stop the one kid from throwing rocks? No.

If rocks are used to throw and hurt people, does this mean that rocks should be banned? The first murder was accomplished without a gun (Gen. 4:8).

David was able to protect himself with some smooth stones (1 Sam. 17). So yes, a good kid with a rock can stop a bad giant with a spear.

This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

When these kids grow up and there is no one on the playground to supervise the rock thrower who is now a thug with a gun (either stolen, bought legally, or manufactured in his basement), what will the people without guns do to protect themselves? The police? The President? The Person who posted the anti-gun meme?

There was a survey done a few years ago that reported that “American civilians use their firearms as often as 2.5 million times every year defending against a confrontation with a criminal, and that handguns alone account for up to 1.9 million defenses per year.”
